No! While some scholarships are specifically for someone either pursuing or looking to advance their career as a pilot, there are several scholarships specifically aligned to non pilot applicants. We believe by advancing women in all aviation and aerospace roles, we advance all roles in aviation and aerospace for women. If you’re a current or aspiring engineer, air traffic controller, in operations or support, safety or investigation, management or leadership, or don’t quite yet know what your jam in aviation or aerospace is, take a look, there may be a scholarship that inspires you. Our scholarship program supports professionals, students and those not yet in the game.
Aspiring, student, and professional pilots are eligible to apply for any scholarship for which they meet the criteria. However, not all scholarships are designated for funding flight training. It is essential to review the terms and conditions of each scholarship to understand its permissible uses.
We are currently preparing for our 2026 Scholarships Program. All available scholarships will be published on our Current Scholarships page.

The short answer: It depends on the specific opportunity.

  • Open Scholarships: These are designed to be flexible, supporting almost any commendable aviation or aerospace endeavor — from flight training to funding a niche technical certification, attendance at a conference or acquiring equipment, advancing your studies or completing exams.
  • Specific Scholarships: Some opportunities are earmarked for particular uses, such as completing a course, membership fees, a type rating or making the most of an opportunity.
  • The Flight Manual: Always check the Terms and Conditions for each individual scholarship before applying to ensure your intended use aligns with the scholarship provider’s requirements.

Whether you are just starting your pre-flight checks or you are a seasoned professional navigating a career transition, the WAI Australia Scholarship Program is designed for you. We value every role within the aviation and aerospace ecosystem equally.

It’s for Everyone in the Ecosystem Aviation is more than just flight decks; we want a diverse hangar. We actively seek applications from:

  • Technical, Trade & Engineering: Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (AMEs), avionics technicians, fitters, and aerospace engineers.
  • Operations & Infrastructure: Air Traffic Controllers, airfield managers, operations officers, schedulers, terminal staff, and dispatchers.
  • Safety & Service: Safety officers, accident investigators, researchers, flight attendants, and aircrew specialists.
  • Management & The Future: Airport managers, aerospace business leaders, drone pilots (RPAS), and space industry aspirants.
  • Recreational Enthusiasts: Those involved in aeroplane, helicopter, glider, or ballooning activities at a recreational level.

We Welcome Every Background Our assessors aren’t looking for a "typical" profile. We strongly encourage applications from:

  • All Career Stages: Students, apprentices, and those discovering aviation later in life.
  • Career Changers: Professionals looking to pivot or veteran members of the workforce looking to upskill.
  • Diverse Perspectives: Women from regional or remote Australia, and those from marginalised or underrepresented backgrounds.

We know your time is valuable. To make our program as accessible as possible, we have removed the challenging weather associated with scholarship applications:

  • Direct Responses: Instead of long-form essays, our application focuses on four targeted questions about your passion and your plan.
  • Merit-Based Entry: Your own motivation and a clear "flight plan" are the primary requirements. We do not require letters of recommendation or external references, allowing your unique story to stand on its own merit.
